Palais d'Isle During my lifetime, I have lived in a few countries, giving me the opportunity to see new places and experience the variety in cultures. I have not lived in France; however, living in Geneva, Switzerland, border to France, allowed me to frequent this country of which I have fond memories. France covers a land area of around 211,208 square miles and a coastline of 2,130. The population is an estimate of 59,329,691 and the country shares borders with Andorra, Monaco, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Spain. Winter or summer time, there is always something to do. We all think of Paris and the Eiffel Tower when we think of France, but one of my favorite places to visit was the town of Annecy. It was a town that would never get old for my family and me, as proven by the numerous times we went. We would usually drive there and go back home the same day. Lac d'Annecy I most enjoyed going during the summer. The best part for me was renting a paddle boat on Lac d’Annecy, said to be one of the cleanest lakes in Europe. At an affordable price, you could rent one of these paddle boats that usually fit four to six people. Some even had a slide that you could use to get in the beautiful, clear water and enjoy a swim. The great mountain views around, and the space away from people in the water just makes this a fun and relaxing time to spend with family or friends. Walking around the town, you can find plenty of shops, restaurants, and historic monuments. This medieval town full of history doesn’t fall short on beauty. You can sit outside a restaurant and enjoy a meal or a drink, possibly by the river Thiou which flows through the streets of the town. A hard to miss monument is the Palais d’Isle, situated at the center of the river. Built in 1132, this is one of the most famous monuments in the town of Annecy, along with the castle and plenty others. At any time of the year, I enjoyed visiting the medieval village of Yvoire. Thirty minutes drive from Geneva, or taking a boat from Nyon in Lac Leman, you could make your way to this place. While walking around Yvoire, you get the feel of the Middle Ages, with the Savoy castle, fortified gateways, stone houses, and the whole setup of the town. Although it is a good place to go to at any time of year, Spring and Summer are nice because of all the well kept flowers, for which it received a trophy for landscape and horticulture. A unique thing you can do here is visit the Garden of Five Senses. Yvoire has steep streets you can walk through, entertain yourself entering the shops, having a savory ice cream or crepe, and surely taking pictures of the amazing sights. Mont Blanc is great a great destination to visit, especially during winter. At 15,782 feet, it is considered the highest mountain in Western Europe. Here, you can find a great number of activities anywhere, and of course skiing is one of the main ones. In the village of Chamonix, there are many great restaurants and chalets everywhere. Driving up, we would just stop at any spot with a slope, take our sleds, and spend a few hours sledding. Not only in winter, but anytime, you can find something to do on the mountain such as hiking, climbing, paragliding, biking, golfing, etc. A nice thing to do is take a tour up a train to see the glaciers. The train goes up very slowly, and you can enjoy the view of the mountains and the trees filled with snow. This site providedis a great guide that will inform you with the necessary information shall you ever visit Chamonix. Papal Palace- Avignon, France When I was in eighth and ninth grade, we took a week’s field trip with our class to Provence, in Southern France. Despite having to work while on this trip, Provence was totally worth it. With much history everywhere you go, we visited a castle, monastery, chapel, Pont Du Gard and the Pont d’Avignon. All over the streets we were reminded with of its history. Provence is one of the places I would definitely want to go back to, because there is so much to do and see, and a week in those two years was not enough. Whether you go in summer or winter, there will always be something that France has to offer. For people of all ages, the different destinations in France are sure to accommodate any needs and keep everyone happy. Pont du Gard |
